whatever actions i can to help others find and stay on the path that i have found. so i am writing this out of order this morning, as i am pretty sure that after my home group i will not have time to consider this topic, with the diligence that i desire. my source material spoke of time in the custody of the state or county, and although i did spend time behind bars, as it were and once considered myself a victim of the justice system, these days, i am grateful that something stepped in and changed my path. those days, entangled in the system were bleak, dark and ones that i care not to repeat, as a result i am a “one and doner.” when i carry that part of my message, i am more than apt to say i was sentenced to recovery, which is not that far off the mark. when i carry the message into those who are behind the bars, as i am apt to do, i let them know that i am no better, no smarter than they are, and certainly no different. had i followed my base instincts, i would have been in the same cycle many of them find themselves in pink cloud recovery ⇒ get my life back ⇒ decide that just one will do the trick ⇒ re-offend when one is not the ticket ⇒ end up behind bars and tangled up in the justice system.
i feel for all those who are incarcerated and could go on about it is the consequence of their actions. while that may be true, i do not need to say or even think that. my stint in the justice system was certainly the consequence of my choices, when it came to feeding the beast of active addiction. i was not a victim, even though being powerless over addiction, may read like that to me, as it once did. i chose the easier softer way and as a result … you know how that story goes and where i ended up today.
anyhow, it is time to walk the dawg and get some steps in, before heading out for my home group. it is a good day to remember that what i have is the product of those who came before me. they treated me with kindness and returned hat with spite, anger and resentment. they smiles and told me to keep coming back, as they had once been where i was and they showed me what empathy was all about, long before i knew that was something i wanted, much less practice, just for today.
