of my recovery program offers abundant and simple advice for what i must do to get humble and stay clean. i accept as a true fact that i will never graduate from recovery and that the only finish line, is the one i cross when i shuffle off this mortal coil. i am more than okay with that, as i have come to see that my life in recovery is a whole lot more than just staying clean. do not get me wrong, staying clean is the bare minimum, i get that, however, there is so much more to do than maintain mere abstinence.
last night i went to a meeting of a group that is in its death throes. i know what the symptom of their demise is and i am not sure if it is my place to step in and make corrections. one of the things that turned me off from groups in my early days, was that some of them, the OGs that were there, shared the exact same thing, at every single meeting. even today, i avoid meetings where i hear the exact same spiel every single time by a member who takes the meeting hostage. for me, i want variety when i go to a meeting. i want to hear what my peers did today to foster their own recovery. i want to see them grow and recover. i want to hear experience, strength and hope and not this and that about all of them. i have choices today and today i choose to attend meetings where i can hear all of that and so much more.
i am one of those who has never left the basics behind. i live an active program of recovery and do my best to bring a message of freedom from active addiction with me no matter where i happen to be. today, i am out of time and need to get this posted and move along, as i am meeting one of the men who call me their sponsor. i do remember that i have what i have today, because i stopped stubbornly believing that my opinion was the truth and allowed my belief structure to soften into a belief system that can be altered as new facts are revealed, just for today.
