if i miss our meetings for a few days. but the more regularly i attend meetings, the more i reinforce my identity as a recovering addict. there is a principle in physics called inertia, which generally states that a body in motion tends to remain in motion and a body at rest tends to remain at rest UNLESS acted upon by some outside force. so what does physics have to do with my meeting attendance. well, it has been my observation, that when i drop my meeting attendance down, i tend to continue to slack on it, until i get so nutz that it is all i can do to make it through the day without tearing off somebody’s head and sh!tting down their throats. what a lovely sentiment, and one that holds true for me in particular. it would be disingenuous for me to apply such an observation in general, but what i can say is that i have seen very few people relapse who go to a meeting every single day.
that being said, i do have to speak about me a bit more. meeting attendance is just one part of my living the program of recovery. it is no more or less important than something like talking to an addict every day, or taking time out to listen for the will of a Higher Power, or doing a daily inventory. there is a giant BUT here, HOWEVER, when i was in early recovery, long before i reached the daily part of step work, it was the daily part of my recovery and it was necessary for me to live my program way back in those ancient times. the habits i picked up then, still carry through today, and when i am unsettles, or feeling antsy, i know that relief for me, can come from just going to a meeting, whether or not i share at all.
what it boils down to is this, if i want to keep what i have been given, then i NEED to bring it out in the light of day, and that is best done at a meeting of the fellowship that allows me to live comfortably in my own skin today. off to the streets and into this brand new day.

☯ The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao ☯

THE TAO TEH KING, OR THE TAO AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS
by Lao-Tse
Translated by James Legge

Book 2

4) Why was it that the ancients prized this Tao so much? Was it not
because it could be got by seeking for it, and the guilty could escape
(from the stain of their guilt) by it? This is the reason why all
under heaven consider it the most valuable thing.
