one thing i have come to understand over the course of my recovery is that i never know which member will share the piece of information that i need to hear today. i also understand that as a human being, i am not as welcoming or friendly to those i perceive as different, regardless if i can see physical differences or not. i would love to say that recovery has rid me of prejudice and bias, but that would be a LIE. recovery has opened my eyes to the fact that i still look at the differences and have problems seeing the similarities.
so here is the dilemma, i know i need to be welcoming to any addict and i want to dismiss those who i see as different, how do i resolve this conflict.
the answer-- work the steps and open my mind and the conflict will resolve itself over time. when i feel 'put-off' by someone different, examine my motives and 'get over it'. the plain and simple truth is that i am not in charge of who GOD will speak through and accept the fact that i can get what i need from any addict in recovery, regardless of the physical or cultural differences that i perceive.
