and positive are no longer value judgements i make about how i feel or the events of my day to day life. once i started down this path of accepting everything, at least everything that personally affects me, as being what it is supposed to be, i found i lived a whole lot more serene and calm life. that is, however, not to say that when something happens that i find unacceptable, that i do not rant and rail about the unfairness of it all and how could this happen to me. i have not achieved anything close to Buddha-like serenity, but i am certainly on that path. this morning, after turkey dinners the past two days in a row, i am in the mood for some red meat and although i know the ecological toll of raising cattle, today i do not care, after all, that animal has already been knocked down, butchered and shipped to my local purveyor of foodstuffs, so the harm is already done. 😜
this morning, as i got up and started my day, i made a plan and so far i have followed it to a “T.” is that a positive outcome, or merely and outcome? on my spiritual path it is the latter, rather than the former and by attaching little importance to what has happened, i can pay attention to what is happening now, and perhaps be awake and aware enough to see what may be coming down the road. i am certainly responsible for taking care of what i have the ability to care for and when i choose to remember, leave the rest in the care of the POWER that fuels my recovery. i may be able to rationalize my guilt over eating red meat away with a bit of tap dancing, but i choose not rationalize my way out of that for which i am responsible. which right here and right now means lighting up a cigar band traveling over to my home group for a meeting, then a walk with a friend, if he is responsible to be there. i am after all, just another addict in recovery, seeking to do the next right thing, whatever that may be, just for today.

☯ The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao ☯
by Lao-Tse
Translated by James Legge
Book 1
The valley spirit dies not, aye the same;
The female mystery thus do we name.
Its gate, from which at first they issued forth,
Is called the root from which grew heaven and earth.
Long and unbroken does its power remain,
Used gently, and without the touch of pain.
