right now, in this moment, i am applying the spiritual principle of practicality. one of the many facets of this recovery program i deem more than acceptable to me, is the tendency to simplify ideas and concepts for addicts such as myself, who get in their heads and complicate the shit out of everything. as smart as i think i happen to be, i still trip myself up by digging far too deep, for hidden meanings and implications. no matter how much experience i seem to accumulate, it sometimes take a cosmic slap upside my head, to let go of what i “think” and allow myself to act on what i “feel.” i know i am not terminally unique in these behaviors, but i am loathe to paint my peers with the same brush by generalizing my experience to them. what i know at this point in my journey, is that i spend far too much time analyzing what i do for my recovery and not enough time celebrating what i have been given.
thinking about where i am today, and trying to gain a bit of perspective on how i feel about world events and my place in them, i feel more than a bit anxious about what is coming down the pike. i also know that what i see happening around me on a macro scale is mostly beyond my power to influence. as a result, i have to let that shit go and work on what i can do to make the lives of those around me, a bit better on a micro scale. that includes the self-obsessed and over-entitled folks that i come across in my daily travels. it is not my job to judge them by their less than stellar behaviors, but to find the ways and means to ameliorate the effects those behaviors have on myself and those around us. i can do that by allowing myself the freedom to forgive them, instantly and seek to put myself in their shoes, at least for a nanosecond, great work when i find it. the trick here, is to let go of whatever it was that they just did and how it affected me.
anyhow it is time for me to go do a workout that i am dreading, this morning. today's workout will be challenging for me, as it is sprints and i am not sure how my knee will hold up. ah, there i go again future-fucking myself. what i need to do and will do is let go and see what happens, i may even surprise myself and do better than i think i will. life happens quickly these days and i need to remember that responding is better than reacting for me, just for today.
