major low points in my life, but when since i stayed close to the fellowship, i could immediately turn to Step One --not Day One-- when my life became unmanageable. not that i ever drift far away from the fellowship, but i have felt, at times, stagnant in my recovery and wondering if it was worth all the effort i put into it.
as i ran my 10K this morning, i thought of three of my peers who i ran into yesterday at convention. one is a “fantasy” sponsee, as he has never worked a step with, nor called my in the decade since he asked me to be his sponsor. i do not judge him, but i really wish he would just call and say YOU''RE FIRED. the second one is someone who is probably not clean as i think he is using to treat the chronic pain in his head, and not necessarily from his fall off a roof. both of those guys are easily for me to dismiss and walk away from without a second thought.
the third, however, has about the same amount of clean time as i do and feels “purposeless and drifting way from the program.” i wish i had more to say to him other than even though i may not know my grand overarching purpose in life, i can listen for what my purpose is “just for today.” it may be the same as yesterday or not. for me, that means i get to be spontaneous and live a life where i stop wondering about the BIG COSMIC questions and live simply in the here and now. which is exactly what i am going to do. time to head out for cigars and football on this seventy degree day in mid November.
