common welfare -- the Twelve Traditions are rich with principles guiding myself and my peers to better embrace one another, regardless of...
it has been a couple of years since i wrote on this topic, i am not sure why i did that in the past, but today, as i perused the standard offerings for my daily dive into the void, this one grabbed me and would not let go. it is not often that happens and why today of all days, well that is a myst0sytery to me and i need not worry, fret or try and figure it out. some of the time it is better to just go with the flow.
i can state unequivocally, that when i came to the rooms of recovery common welfare and unity were not on the top of my list. anonymity, however was what i was all about. i may have wanted to wear a physical mask to hide who i was, but i settled for my default behavior of hiding behind my mask of self-righteous anger, arrogance and distance. i kept my angst and “issues” on the down-low and did my best to stay far, far away from ever becoming one of “those people.” reaching a place where mere abstinence and fronting recovery was no longer working for me, i decided to at a minimum, test the waters, as i still had another eighteen months left on my number to kill. i told myself that if nothing changed, i could always go back to using. when one hears the same message, time and again, no matter where on e happens to be, one gets weary of the fight and actually begins the process of being more than one ever was. to say i was worn down by the love, unity and common welfare of the rooms, would be an apt description as to how this addict came to find a life in recovery.
today, as i sat in the group conscience of my home group, i noticed who was missing and felt their absence. over the days i have been clean, i am usually pretty much focused on who is there, rather than who is not. where that one hundred and w-eight degree change occurred, is one of those mysteries that i need not explore. it certainly is who i am today and i will allow myself to accept it at face value. one might say that i have finally internalized the regardless of bit of out Traditions and allow myself to be a whole lot more open-minded about the value of one addict helping another. a someone who has always been a staunch supporter of what the fellowship is, softening my opinion about who belongs, is a tectonic shift in my attitude and one that was long overdue. with that said, time to do my taxes 🤢 and get a walk in. it is a good day to remember that the message of our fellowship is FREEDOM and today i am freed.
