one of those people with stories and kindness for the newer folks and are moved by being a part of their miracle. i have not always been one of those guys, even though i did my best to emulate those who were. this is a perfect example of behaving my way into better thinking. i had an aversion to the newest of the new, especially when i saw my peers flocking around them and talking in a chorus of twelve stompers. i was the one who looked for the newcomer who was isolated, alone and doing his best to get out of the door, before anyone spoke to him. and yes that is the correct pronoun i learned early i that i had very little to offer the newcomers who were female. my job was to point them towards other women and keep them out of the clutches of my predatory peers, of which there seemed to be more than a few. i digress and i need to get back on track.
it would be so nice to say that i am the most welcoming member at any meeting. it would be nice to say that i only share hope and solution at every meeting. i m not that guy and probably never will be, and yes i am more than okay with that fact of my life. i performed all sorts of role through my life in active addiction and recovery and no longer choose to be anyone that i am not. i leave that cosplay to my peers who find that is who they need to be. it is however a wonderful thing to see the light come on in the eyes of our newer members. it is even more exciting to see them come back day after day, month after month and year after year, staying clean just for today. it is even more amazing to see them turn into the ones with the stories and kindness for the members who are just walking in the door.
yes, i know, yippy-skippy is not my thing. the problem is that this reading makes me feel optimistic and brings out that yippy-skippy sort of stuff. i am grateful that i have found a life with purpose and that purpose is to carry the message of recovery to the still suffering addict. in fact, that is my next task of the day, to get out and about and to a meeting that i have found to be a big part of my weekly routine. it is a good day to be a bit more upbeat and yes to celebrate a day clean.
