at the difference between what i am saying, what is heard, and how people are responding to me can be the beginning of real change in all my relationships. i can honestly say that when i came to recovery i knew everything and was always absolutely right. listening the what others had to say was below me and not worth me spending any time, trying to get a clue about who they were and exactly what they were trying to tell me. that sis not lead to very strong or lasting relationships and much to my dismay, did not enhance my social standing within the fellowship. what it did do, however, was get me to stop and become present, once i got over my big bad self and actually started to take responsibility for my actual recovery.
opening up and paying attention did not come upon me like a hurricane, it was actually more like the drip, drip, drip of some sort of ancient water torture. bit, by bit, i began to wonder what i was missing and what i could do to make the connections that i suddenly realized i was missing out on. as i stayed clean, progressed on my recovery journey and learned how to be present for others and for myself, communication became a whole lot less complicated and more straightforward. the final shoe to drop, was when i came out from the lie that ruled me for so long, and started to uncover my “true” self.
that process is still ongoing and i am starting to lose my fear of becoming something i never was and never wanted to be. i am actually becoming intrigued by the possibilities that lie beyond my SEVENTH STEP, but am not going to go down that rabbit hole. where i will go today, is that i can allow myself the freedom to pay attention and walk a path where i am listening to what others are telling me, responding when necessary and if asked, offer a solution. as i step out into the real world at work this morning, i can be okay knowing that just for today, it is me who makes communication complicated and if i want it to be simpler, i have to let go of what i think i “know” and be present to fill in the gaps.
