to treat addiction with vigilance and perseverance, keeping hope alive to deepen and sustain my recovery. i am not one of those who creams his jeans every time my source material speaks about HOPE. quite the contrary, as my relationship with HOPE is complicated at best. i have trouble, from time to time, distinguishing between HOPE and wishful thinking and i have to pause and take stock. what it comes down to, at least for me, is that HOPE like FAITH without works, is just hot air. this morning, as i prepare to step out of my warm and toasty home and into the cold, cruel world of retail, i have HOPE that, at a minimum i can stay clean just for today.
i have all sorts of other roads that my HOPE can and does travel: winning the POWERBALL jackpot, running a 10K race in under fifty minutes, having the ability and the opportunity to summit Capitol Peak and the litany goes on and on. all of those events may happen and all three require action on my part. the difference between staying clean just for today and any of the activities in that list is that in living a program of recovery, i can do this in the here and now. the rest? well they will require action on my part, above and beyond a program of active recovery. is it HOPE or wishful thinking? even if i do the work for any of those the chances are slim i will ever achieve any of them, but at least two out of three are in my power and something i can strive to achieve.
i do have to get rolling out to my little job and a day of being social, friendly and gregarious, which is not part of my naturals state, or at least up until recently, so oi believed. what i am uncovering is a personality that actually enjoys being a part of the world and interacting with it as he goes through his day. it is a great day to be clean and just for today, i HOPE i do not need to spend any more of my accumulated reward points to correct my mistake.
