i have a friend and peer that is fond of saying that when they came to the program they would not have known a spiritual principle even if they tripped over it. that is certainly the case for me as well. what i discovered as i kept coming back, was that many of my “values,” were very synonymous with the spiritual principles of the program, and NOTHING that i was taught was a spiritual principle was going to kill me. the spiritual nature of STEP THREE has been a long and winding road for me. once upon a time, before my level of desperation reached a level greater than my denial, i mechanically practiced surrender to the care of a HIGHER POWER that i had “borrowed” from my original sponsor. even though i did not “believe” i was willing enough to give it a try. the trip through the growth of my spirituality is a story i have told before, so i will just fast-forward to today.
i have said i am not a “prayerful” or “GOD” type on guy. what does that mean on a practical level, after all if it is not practical it is not spiritual. on a practical level, this action and yes there is an action here, is to walk in the FAITH, that IF i allow myself to “feel” the next right thing to do. that is really the most important part of HOW i apply the THIRD STEP in my life today. simply spiritual as that may sound, the application of it and explaining HOW i do so to my peers.
for me, it comes down to letting go in the moment, pausing to allow my emotions to settle and find ground, and then to act on whatever it is i am feeling after i take a moment to “get in touch” with myself and the POWER that fuels my recovery. i ask without literally asking and i get the answers i am seeking without thinking about them. in short, by stepping out of the way, i know what to do. giving the reins over to something as nebulous as the POWER that fuels my recovery, is not a task i take lightly. despite having a few days clean, i still, at times, find myself sinking into the pits of self-will and trying to conduct my life, under my own power. some of the time, the consequnces of doing so are to my liking, most of the time, not so much. what i have learned and carry forward today is that i CAN practice this action, it is practical in my my day to day existence.
as a result, i CAN share this with my peers, and the successes that ihave, can also be theirs. it is a great day to end this up and move along to my next task, which be work.
before i go, my friend and sponosee Reese F was air-lifted from Staemboat to Loveland, because he had fluid on his heart. please send prayers or best wishesor positive mojo or healing thoughts his way.
