i was far fro a quick study when it came to finding common ground with my peers. i still believed that i was superior and had stubbornly held on to my world view until it became obvious that it would no longer be of any benefit to me. only when the desire to use finally left me, did i soften enough to allow the process of recovery to take hold. i required evidence of what my peers had achieved before i could let go and start to accept them as equals. as that change in my attitude and perception took hold, so did my discover that common ground was more than my uncontrollable desire to get high. i was starting to see that the problem was what i carried into the rooms, me!
after doing this gig for so long, it has become part of who i am. i understand that i share more than addiction and the desire to carry a message of recovery with my peers, i share the underlying fact that recovery transforms someone into being a person they never saw as a possibility. that i have yet to reach that mythical state is not a failure of the program, my peers or the common ground we share. it is evidence that i have entered into something that will continue to change me and probably never reach the climax of which i dream. that is not something that troubles me, but it is certainly enough to keep me in recovery and willing to find the common ground with my peers in all aspects of my life.
